Biography and Profile

Franziska Giffey, born Franziska Süllke on May 3, 1978, is a prominent German politician from the Social Democratic Party (SPD). She has served as the Governing Mayor of Berlin since April 2021 and was the Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women, and Youth from 2018 to 2021.

Giffey is a graduate of the University of Potsdam and holds a degree in administrative sciences and European affairs.

Political Career

Giffey began her political career in 2002, becoming a member of the Neukölln district council in Berlin. She rose through the ranks, serving as deputy mayor of Neukölln from 2010 to 2015.

In 2015, Giffey was elected to the Bundestag, the German federal parliament. She served as the SPD's spokesperson for urban development and housing policy.

Governing Mayor of Berlin

In 2021, Giffey was elected Governing Mayor of Berlin, becoming the city's first female mayor.

During her tenure, she has focused on improving affordable housing, expanding public transportation, and promoting social justice.

Attack in 2023

In April 2023, Giffey was attacked at an event in a Berlin library. A man struck her from behind with a heavy object. Giffey sustained minor injuries but was able to continue her public appearances.

The attack has been condemned by politicians and the public, with many expressing solidarity with Giffey.
